Hasler and Adams cruise Newark past Elmira

Chad Adams establishes new franchise record with six RBI

Newark, NY — The Newark Pilots (19-24) defeat the Elmira Pioneers (21-21) by a final of 10-4 on a rainy Saturday night. The Pilots can clinch a playoff spot in the Western Division with one more win or a Utica loss.

A four-run fourth put the Pilots up early and they would never relinquish the lead. With bases loaded, Josh Ludwig (University of Rochester) smacked a triple into center, clearing the bases putting the Pilots up 3-0. Chad Adams (Saint Rose) would follow and get his first of six RBI, bringing home Ludwig and increasing the Pilot lead to four.

Adams gave Newark insurance in the sixth as he brought in Ludwig, Max Rosing (Cortland State) and Steve Laurino (Marist) on a triple to right center field off Elmira reliever Jim Tunison (Misericordia). At the end of six the Pilots led 7-0.

The Pioneers brought three runs home in the seventh. Matthew Pelt (Wofford) had a two-run double and then later scored on a Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) single to right field.

Drew Hasler (3-3, Valparaiso) received more than enough run support as he pitched a gem, going a full seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and five strikeouts. Hasler carried a shutout through six innings.

Chris Gould (2-3, Saint Rose) is slated with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings.

Newark would add two more late in the game as Adam acquired his second hit and last two RBI of the night. The single to center field scored Samm Wiggins (Houston Baptist) and Rosing.

Laurino, Wiggins, Rosing and Adams all had two hits apiece, and Rosing scored a game-high three runs. Ludwig had three RBI. Kalousdian was the only Pioneer batter with multiple hits while Pelt lead the team in RBI with two.

Newark has a day off Sunday before hosting their last home game of the season against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. Starting pitch on Monday July 29th is 7:05 p.m. at Colburn Park. Elmira will travel to Murnane Field on Sunday to play a Western Division opponent in the Utica Brewers.
