Newark, NY — During the only Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) action of the night, the Newark Pilots (10-15) defeat the Utica Brewers (9-11) 5-3 at Colburn Park. This Pilot win breaks a three game win streak for the Brewers.
Drew Hasler (2-2, Valparaiso) earned his second win of the season pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out a game-high five batters. The bullpen was clicking as Joe Pokrentowski (Saint Rose), Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) and closer Donald Frew (Young Harris) allowed a combined one hit. Frew successfully recorded his fifth save of the season.
The first score of the game came in the third inning as the Pilots brought three in to score. Taylor Hinshaw recorded the first RBI (Georgia College) on a sacrifice fly to left field. David Vandercook (Columbia) followed with a triple bringing home Steve Laurino and Jacob Russell (University of Kentucky).
The Brewers responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. With a man on second, Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) singled to center field. Utica scored again in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Michael Pierson (Appalachian State).
Utica Brewers pitcher Eric Brothers (0-2, Sioux Falls) started the game allowing seven hits and five runs over 3 2/3 innings before being replaced by Ryan Butzer (Davenport University).
A wild pitch by Brothers, in the fourth, allowed Pilot base runners to advance to second and third. An out at home plate was followed by a two-run triple by Jacob Russell. Russell ended the game 3-for-4, and scoring a run of his own.
Despite Nathan Mann’s (Brown) two out single in the top of the ninth the Brewers were unable to capitalize. K’shawn Smith’s (Stetson) infielder was easily handled halting any chance of a Utica comeback.
The Brewers have a day off on Friday before traveling to Glens Falls on Saturday to face the Golden Eagles. Newark will also get a days rest before a weekend road trip facing the Cooperstown Hawkeyes on Saturday and the Adirondack Trailblazers Sunday. The Pilots next home game is Monday July 8th against the Syracuse Salt Cats.
