Onondaga comes into Newark and wins 12-5
NEWARK, NY (6.10.17) – The Newark Pilots (1-6) fell at home to the Onondaga Flames (3-4) to run their losing streak up to 6 games. The Flames scored 6 runs off of Pilots starting pitcher Adam Donovan (DeSales University), and 6 runs off of the Pilots bullpen. Jake Binder (Syracuse) allowed just 2 runs over 5 innings of work.
The Flames kicked off the scoring in the top of the second, when Matt Carey (Ithaca) and Wyatt Myers (Buffalo) each drove in a run with a single. The Pilots would tie the score in the bottom of the fourth when Graham Hackbarth (Pearl River CC) and Mark McKenna (Canisius) drove in runs on groundouts.
The Flames would open the game up the following inning, scoring 4 runs off of Donovan and eventually knocking him out of the game. Trey Baur (Cornell), Carey, Kyle Gallagher (Cornell), and Myers all drove in runs on base hits for the Flames. The Pilots cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth when McKenna walked with the bases loaded and John Balliet (Orange Coast College) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Onondaga ended all hopes of a Pilots comeback in the top of the seventh when the scored 4 runs off of 3 different Pilots relievers. Gallagher scored the first run on a wild pitch, then Gage Lanning (Canisius) drove in a run with a walk. Baur, single, and Carey, walk, drove in the other two runs in the inning to go up 10-4.
Onondaga added 2 runs in the top of the ninth on a pinch-hit double by Laz Moralez (Tomkins County CC) an RBI ground out by Myers off of Jordan Miller (Coastal Alabam CC). The Pilots would add a run on a Over Torres double (Yavapai CC) in the bottom half.
Binder (5ip, 5h, 2er, 2bb, 3k) picks up his first win of the summer for the Flames. Donovan (4.1ip, 8h, 6er, 4bb, k) takes the loss for the Pilots. Tyler Rourke (Alabama A&M) picks up the save for Onondaga (3ip, 2h, 1er, 2bb, 4k).
Baur and Carey each scored 3 runs for the Flames, Carey and Myers each drove in 3 runs, and Stephen Bennett (Canisius) stole 3 bases. Jorge Leon (Hendrix College) and Will Allocca (Virginia) each scored 2 runs for the Pilots, McKenna drove in 2.
The Pilots face the Elmira Pioneers tomorrow night at Colburn Park, 5:05 start time.
