Watertown holds on to extra-inning win over Newark.
The Watertown Rams (3-5) scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Newark Pilots (2-5) at Colburn Park on Tuesday night.
Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the tenth, the Pilots made things interesting to stay alive in the ball game. The first three batters all reached base via one hit batter and forcing two walks. However, Watertown’s Daniel Reitzler (San Diego) calmed down to strike out David Vandercook (Columbia) and then forcing the game ending 5-3 double play.
With the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Watertown’s Dominic Lopez (Texas A&M Corpus-Christi) singled, allowing Tyler Fullerton (Mississippi State University) and J.J. Wagner (Pacific) to score. With one out in the inning, Joe Moroney (Kansas) scored on a passed ball which also allowed Lopez to get to third. Kyle Lombardo doubled in the Rams’ fourth run of the inning, giving them the lead of 7-3.
Trailing 2-3 to Watertown, Newark was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Jake Hanson (Valaparaiso) doubled down to right field allowing Matt McKinnon (University of Penn.) to score.
Will Spitzfaden (Southeast Missouri State) took his first loss of the season for the Pilots. The lefty worked 9 1/3 innings, while allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Logan Grant (Creighton) earned his second win of the season for the Rams in three innings of relief. The righty only allowed one hit during his tenure and struck out one batter.
Newarks’ Mckinnon led the team with two runs and two runs batted in courtesy of his two-run homer over the right field wall. Mckinnon, Hanson, Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer), and Jeff Edwards (Valaparaiso) all combined for all eight of the team’s hits.
Kyle Lombardo (St. John’s) had a team high three hits, while batting in two runs. Moroney and Lopez combined for four hits, three runs, and four runs batted in.
The Pilots will be on the road Wednesday as they look face off against the Glens Falls Eagles at East Field Stadium at 7:05 pm. The Watertown Rams will travel back home as they host the Adirondack Trail Blazers at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds for a 7:00 pm game time.
