NEWARK, N.Y. – The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) has named Newark shortstop Cody Wiktorski the Player of the Week for the week spanning July 13-19, announced on Monday by the league office.
Wiktorski, a rising senior at St. John Fisher College, batted .414 (12-for-29) over the course of the week. Of those 12 hits, nine went for extra bases as he slugged six doubles, one triple and two home runs. He also scored six runs and drove in 15. His number of hits, extra-base hits, RBIs and slugging percentage (.897) led all qualifying batters in the PGCBL last week.
The Penfield, N.Y., native began the week going 2-for-4 with a double, triple and a season-high five RBIs in a 13-3 win over Elmira on July 14. He drove in the game-winning runs with a three-run double as the Pilots outlasted Glens Falls, 6-4, on July 17. Wiktorski put together his second four-hit performance of the season on July 18 in Elmira. He finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a deep three-run shot to left field. The following afternoon in Victor, he hit his second three-run home run in as many days.
Overall, Wiktorski is batting .315 for the Pilots this season. He leads the squad with 24 RBIs, 13 doubles, four triples and is tied for the team lead with four home runs. He leads the entire PGCBL with 21 extra-base hits and is second in total bases (73) and slugging percentage (.575).
Wiktorski is one of six Newark all-stars who will participate in the 2015 PGCBL All-Star Game, hosted by the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs tonight. A Home Run Derby is scheduled to begin at at 5 p.m., followed by the All-Star Game at approximately 6:45 p.m.
