Babin and Offense Lead Pilots to Victory

Newark defeats Watertown 5-1

NewarksSaundersDraftedinMLB2012DraftThe Newark Pilots (24-19) defeated the Watertown Wizards (17-25) at Colburn Park, Friday night. In game that saw a pitcher’s duel in the first four innings, ends in a 5-1 win for the Pilots as their offense took off in the fifth inning. 
Cullen Babin (Delta State) was in control, as he had a dominant game for the Pilots on his way to his third win of the season. The righty shut down the Wizards’ offense, as he gave up no runs on just four hits in his eight innings of work. Babin struck out six batters and only walked one.

Newark was the first team to put up some numbers on the scoreboard. With a man on third, Tyler McDonald (Millersville University) singled in Chris Doyle (UC Davis). Austin Logan (UC Davis) also provided the team with a RBI double, scoring Brent Langston (Delta State). Joe Landi (University of Rhode Island) had the biggest hit of the inning a he added to the lead with a three run homer over the right field wall.

In the top of the ninth, Watertown’s Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) got rid of the shutout with one swing of the bat as he homered over the wall in right-center field.

Nick Bradley (Western Michigan) took the mound for the visitors, as he took the loss for the team. The pitcher pitched six innings, as he gave up five earned runs on eight hits. Bradley struck out five and walked just one batter.

The Pilots will be on the road Saturday night, as they travel to Cooperstown to take on the Hawkeyes at Doubleday Field for a game time start of 5:00. The Wizards will be home as they host the Elmira Pioneers at Duffy Fairgrounds at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
