Newark Sweeps Watertown in Doubleheader

Pilots defeat Wizards 12-5 and 6-5 in their two games


The Newark Pilots (18-16) swept the Watertown Wizards (13-20) in their doubleheader matchup at Colburn Park on Friday night. The Pilots won game one 12-5 and walked off in the twelfth inning for the second night in row as they defeated the Wizards 6-5.

Newark 12, Watertown 5

Watertown wasted no time in getting their offense started as they jumped out in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead over the home team. With runners at the corners and one out in the inning, Cole Gleason (Wabash Valley CC) singled in Derek Hagy (Texas Pan American). Chris Glynn (UW Parkside) provided the biggest thump as he blasted a three run homer over the wall in right-center field; Jordan Enos (Holy Cross) and Gleason were the runners that scored.

Newark scored six combined runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. The biggest moment in the third was when Micah Easterling (UT-Dallas) and Josh Perez (Mississippi College) both scored on a fielding error that was committed by the opposing shortstop. In the fourth, Perez and Joe Landi (University of Rhode Island0 provided the biggest RBI hits of the inning as they hit a triple and double, respectively.

Three continued to be the trend, as the home team scored at least three runs for the third inning in a row; Newark tallied six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Langston had the biggest hit of the inning as he drove in two more runs on a double, scoring Chris Doyle (UC Davis) and Bostick.

Daniel Thorpe (St. Joseph’s University) started for the Pilots in game one of the doubleheader as he earned his fifth win of the season. The righty was effective as he gave up four earned runs on eight hits; he gave up all four runs in the first inning. Thorpe walked and hit two while striking out a game high eight batters.

Newark 6, Watertown 5

The recent trend of extra innings and walk offs continued in game two of the doubleheader for the Pilots. Newark was able to walk off for the second night in a row. With the bases loaded and one out in the twelfth inning, Chris Doyle (UC Davis) blasted a pitch into dead center, allowing Josh Perez (Mississippi College) to come home for the winning run.

The Pilots scored first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Tyler McDonald (Millersville University) and Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher College) both a contributed to the early lead as they each recorded a RBI.

Watertown didn’t let Newark keep that lead for too long, as they had tallied four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Holy Cross teammates Brandon Cipolla and Jordan Enos each contributed a RBI in the inning. Cole Gleason (Wabash Valley) had the innings biggest hit as he doubled in Derek Hagy (Texas Pan American) and Enos.

Trailing 4-3, the league leader in RBI Brent Langston (Delta State) added to his lead by blasting a two run homer over the left field wall. The two run shot gave the Pilots a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Watertown bounced back again, as they tied the score 5-5 in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Jordan Enos (Holy Cross) worked a base on balls and drove in Donald Walter (Cal Poly Ponoma) for the tying run.

Chris Rogers (Oklahoma Baptist University) pitched three innings of relief for Newark as he earned his third win of season. The righty was hitless through three innings and struck out five batters. Brian Burns (Plattsburgh) earned the loss for Watertown. The righty pitched two innings of relief as he gave up the winning run on three hits while striking out three and walking two batters.

The Pilots next game will be on Sunday as they will host Glens Falls at Colburn Park for a game time start of 7:05 p.m. The Watertown Wizards will be on the road again on Saturday, as they will visit Veteran’s Park in Mohawk Valley to take on the DiamondDawgs for a game time start of 7:05 p.m.
