Pilots Announce First Signings; Hoos, Gorman To Return In 2016

2015 Pilots Cameron Hoos & Will Gorman set to return in 2016.

NEWARK, N.Y. – The Newark Pilots have announced their first signings for the 2016 season with the return of outfielder Will Gorman and right-handed pitcher Cameron Hoos from last season’s squad.

Gorman will provide a hard-hitting left-handed bat to the Newark lineup, as the junior from the Rochester Institute of Technology returns to Colburn Park as the franchise’s home run leader. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound outfielder set the Pilots’ single-season home run record with five dingers last season. Overall, Gorman batted .305 with 29 runs, 17 RBIs and 15 extra-base hits in 33 games.

Entering his junior campaign at RIT, the Nassau, N.Y., native is fourth all-time in program history in career slugging percentage at .608 and is tied for seventh with nine career homers. As a sophomore, he set the program single-season record for RBIs with 46 en route to All-Liberty League First Team, American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-New York Region First Team, and D3Baseball.com All-New York Region First Team honors.

Hoos saw his 2015 summer season with Newark cut short due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament, which required Tommy John surgery. The towering 6-foot-7 righty made four appearances out of the bullpen for the Pilots, hurling 6.2 innings with five strikeouts. He earned the win on June 13 against Utica with 1.2 hitless innings of work and two strikeouts. He also tossed 1.2 scoreless innings against Mohawk Valley on July 6.

Due to his surgery, Hoos will be forced to redshirt his junior season this spring at DeSales University in Center Valley, Penn. As a freshman, he was named to the All-Freedom Conference First Team and ABCA/Rawlings Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team with a minute 1.45 ERA in 17 relief appearances. During his sophomore campaign, the Princeton, N.J., native fanned 30 in 31.1 innings. In his first collegiate start on March 29, 2015, he tossed a one-hitter with a season-high eight strikeouts in a win over Manhattanville College.

The Newark Pilots open the 2016 season in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) on Wednesday, June 1 in Jamestown. The home opener at Colburn Park is scheduled for Friday, June 3 at 7:05 p.m. against the Geneva Red Wings.
