Pilots Defeat Outlaws on Opening Night

Newark Pilots take down Oneonta Outlaws 6-2 in Season Opener

NEWARK, NY (6.1.17) – The Newark Pilots defeated the Oneonta Outlaws at Colburn Park on Opening Night 6-2.  Left-handed pitcher Kyle Griffen (Louisiana Tech) picked up his first victory of the summer with a stellar pitching performance going 6 strong innings, 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 6 strikeouts.  Oneonta’s runs came on a wild pitch in the fourth and a past ball in the fifth.

“I thought he was an outstanding pitcher tonight,” praised Head Coach John Mayotte.  “A couple wild pitches and past balls spoiled his shutout, but he’s got good stuff, he’s got a lot of movement, a lot of deception, not an abundance of velocity which isn’t important to him since every ball has movement on it.”

The Pilots scored their runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and 5 hit by pitches.  Tyler Odekirk (Irvine Valley CC) drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk in the second.  Will Allocca (University of Virginia) had the big hit in the third with a two run double to left, he would come around to score on an error.  Jorge Leon (Hendrix College) and Odekirk both drove in runs on groundouts in the fifth and eights respectively to round out the scoring.

“I thought they showed good discipline tonight,” Mayotte added.  “The shortstop [Odekirk] had a great extended at-bat (in the eighth), I like to call those tough at-bats.  They’re the hallmark of a really good team.”

Jake Bernardo (Fordham University) picked up the save in relief of Griffen, pitching 3 innings, allowing no hits while striking out two.  He was also helped out defensively in the eighth when Odekirk made consecutive plays over his right shoulder.

“I thought the shortstop [Odekirk] just stippled any potential rally with his two plays in left field,” stated Mayotte.  “And D’Marcus was just awesome on the bases.  The top two guys look like they can be an exciting duo.”

Center Fielder D’Marcus Guillory (Motlow State) went 1-3 and had four stole bases in as many tries in the lead-off spot.  John Balliet (Orange Coast College) and Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) both had a hit for the Pilots.

With the opening night win, the Pilots are now 1-0.  They head to Geneva tomorrow night and will be back at Colburn Park on June 10 to face Onondaga.
