Watertown, NY — Dan Gautieri (Penn) tossed a complete game shutout to lead visiting Newark (15-23) over host Watertown (23-16) by a score of 3-0. The Pilots scored all three of their runs in the first third of the game to defeat the Rams. Watertown starting pitcher Joe Adel (South Florida) took the loss for the Rams.
Newark jumped on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) led off the inning with a hit by pitch. A Steve Laurino (Marist) double plated Edwards and gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Newark added two runs in the third to strengthen their lead to 3-0. Jeff Edwards once again led off the inning by getting on-base, this time via single. Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer) sacrificed Edwards to second followed by a fly out by Max Rosing (Cortland). David Vandercook (Columbia) then doubled home Edwards to score the second run of the game for the Pilots. Steve Laurino followed Vandercook’s RBI with his own, driving in the Pilot third baseman with a single.
The real story of the game was the complete game effort from Dan Gautieri. Gautieri struck out five while allowing six Rams hits. The complete game was Gautieri’s first this summer and the fifth by a Newark starter. Rams starter Joe Adel (4-2) tossed seven innings allowing three earned runs in the loss. Adel was able to avoid major damage despite giving up ten hits.
Bobby Indeglia (Holy Cross) was the only Rams player to tally multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Nik Alfonso (South Florida) finished the night 1-for-3 for Watertown.
Max Rosing, Steve Laurino, and Scott Matthews (Washington, MD) all tallied multiple hits for coach Mike Armstrong. Rosing finished the night 2-for-2 with two doubles while Laurino contributed two RBIs in his 3-for-4 game. Scott Matthews ended the night 2-for-4.
Watertown is off tomorrow before returning to action on Tuesday with a double-header against the Elmira Pioneers at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Newark travels to Cooperstown tomorrow to face the Hawkeyes with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 PM.
