Pilots Win 2-1 on the Road

The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs returned home on Wednesday to Veteran’s Memorial Park for its Perfect Game Collegiate League (PGCBL) matchup against the Newark Pilots riding a three game winning streak but came up short losing 2-1.

Michael DeCarlo (Herkimer CC) got the start for the DiamondDawgs and picked up his first loss of the season pitching five innings allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), walking two and striking out six.  He was relieved by Taylor Wright (Brown) who pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing four hits and picking up a strikeout and Tyler Brey (ULM) pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing a walk and recording five strikeouts.

Newark starter Will Spitzfaden (Southeast Missouri State) pitched a strong game picking up his first win of the season going eight innings allowing six hits, a run, a walk and striking out three.  Donald Frew (Young Harris) came in for an inning allowing one hit and solidifying his first save.

The DiamondDawgs hit into twelve fly ball outs with Dalton Harrington (ULM) going 2 for 4 with a stolen base, Jordan Serena (Columbia) was 2 for 3 with a walk and a double, Trey Hunt (Point Loma Nazarene) was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double, Mike Fischer (Columbia) was 1 for 3 with a double and Casey Rodrigue (LSU Eunice) had the sole run batted in.

The Pilots hitting was limited to all singles with Josh Ludwig (Rochester) going 2 for 5, Matt McKinnon (Pennsylvania) was 1 for 1 in a pinch hitting effort, Jacob Russell (Kentucky) was 1 for 4, Max Rosing (Cortland State)  was 2 for 4, Joey Simmons (Finger Lakes CC) was 1 for 4 with a run scored, Jake Hanson (Valparaiso) was 1 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in and Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer) had a run batted in.

With the win the Newark Pilots improve to 1-2 while the Diamonddawgs drop two on the year.
