Record Strike Outs Lead to Pilots Win

Newark, NY — Starting pitcher for the Pilots was Michael Springer (BYU) who went 7 innings with 3 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks, and 11 strikeouts, which is 2nd-most in Pilots history, and earned his 4th win. For the Utica Brewers, John McGinty (Hartford) started and lost the decision and dropped to 0-2 on the season. The Pilots finished the game with the most strikeouts in team history with 15; Andrew Tidwell (Saginaw Valley St.) adding 1 strikout and Travis Laitar (Cortland State) adding 3 more in the top of the 9th.

With Utica down 3-1 in the top of the 3rd, Hayden Kelly (Polk State) tied the game at 3 with a 2-run HR. The Pilots bounced back with a 1 run groundout by Wyatt Padgett (BYU) in the 6th inning. The Pilots added two more runs to their lead in the 7th inning to extend their lead to 6-3. In the bottom of the 8th, the Brewers faced 13 Pilot batters, allowed 3 hits, 2 earned runs, and allowed 9 runs to come across the plate. Austin Clock (Cortland State) began the inning with a walk, followed by Wiggins (Houston Baptist) being hit by a pitch, and Padgett being walked to load the bases. A wild pitch brought in Clock to extend the lead 7-3. A fielder’s choice and a throwing error brought in two more runs for the Pilots. Tommy Wagner (Cornell) brought in two more runs with a line drive to right field and a throwing error to 3rd to add to the Pilot’s lead 11-3. Clock had a 2 RBI single with his second at bat of the inning. An RBI single by Wiggins and an RBI groundout by Logan Boyher (Columbia) finished the scoring for the inning at 15-3.

Travis Laitar came into the game in relief in the 9th inning, striking out three straight batters to end the game and please the 2,107 fans in attendance.
