Utica, NY — There were clear skis and plenty of sunshine at Colburn park on Saturday night as the Newark Pilots took on the Utica Brewers infront of 350 fans. It was a match up of two teams in two very different places in the standings. Newark entered the game a top the West division at 5-2 while Utica brings up the rear of the division at 1-5. The Pilots sent their ace to the mound in Robert Robbins (Stevens) in their second home game of the season.
Robbins didn’t disappoint as he set the tempo for the game early, tossing 3 2/3 innings of hit less baseball to start. The Pilots gave Robbins plenty of runs support. Braxton Willkes (Kansas State) lead off the contents for the home team with a double to deep right and later came around to score on an RBI ground out by Luis Silverio (Palm Beach CC). The Pilots lead 2-0 after the first. Newark got another pair of runs on an odd play in the third. After a double steal put Silverio on third and Samm Wiggins (Houston Baptist) on second, Tanner Giesel (Southeastern CC) lifted a flyball to left field. Joe Daru (NYIT) camped under the ball but threw it well over home plate, causing the ball to bounce off the backstop which allowed Wiggins to tag and score all the way from second base.
The Pilots added two more runs in the sixth but the story of the game was Robert Robbins as he went seven shutout innings, scattered 4 walks, struck out five and only allowed one hit in the win. Giesel powered the Pilots offensively collecting two of Newarks seven hits with a pair of singles to go along with an RBI and a run scored.
Newark swept the two game homestand and will be back on the diamond tomorrow evening in Elmria to take on the Pioneers at 5:05pm. The Pilots are back at Colburn Park on Monday night, first pitch 7:05
