PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Connecticut sophomore and 2015 Newark Pilot Willy Yahn was named to the 2016 Preseason American Athletic All-Conference Team, announced by the league in December.
Yahn returns to UConn after a phenomenal freshman campaign that resulted in Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors. As a rookie, he batted .343 with six doubles, two triples and three home runs. Yahn ranked fifth in the American in batting average en route to Second-Team All-Conference accolades.
Over the summer, the third baseman hit at a .254 clip with 10 doubles and one triple. He drove in 21 runs for the Pilots, scored 12 and added seven stolen bases. Yahn also became a fan favorite at Colburn Park for his aggressive, highlight-reel defense at the hot corner. In his finest performance of the summer season, the Sharon, Conn., native finished a perfect 5-for-5 and reached base safely in all seven plate appearances to help the Pilots secure a 4-3 victory over Adirondack in 14 innings on June 11.
For his efforts, Yahn represented Newark on the West Division team in the 2015 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) All-Star Game in Little Falls, N.Y.
UConn received one first-place vote and was picked to finished fourth in The American in the preseason poll of the league’s head coaches. Yahn and the Huskies open the upcoming season on Friday, February 19, at the University of Texas at San Antonio for the first of a three-game series.
The Newark Pilots return to Colburn Park on Friday, June 3, for their 2016 home opener against the Geneva Red Wings at 7:05 p.m. Season tickets for the upcoming season are on sale now and can be purchased by contacting team president Leslie Ohmann at 315-576-6710 or at email@example.com.
